He was called: Charles, Kato, Chuck, and Mr. Chuck, Mr. Scott, Professor Scott, and Dr. Scott; and he answered to all.
Dr. Charles Kato Scott was born January 1, 1946, in Macon GA. He was the only child of the late Mr. William Scott and Mrs. Louise Cato Nealy, and stepson to Mr. Levertis Nealy. Charles was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith during early childhood, served as an altar boy, and remained faithful to the Catholic church in Macon GA, Atlanta GA, and Pittsburgh PA, where he served as an usher at St Paul Cathedral.
He departed this life Wednesday morning, August 27, 2025.
Charles graduated from St. Peter Claver Elementary, Macon, GA, and Ballard Hudson High School, 1965, Macon, GA. He continued his education at Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA, and graduated in 1969. After Morehouse, he continued the educational journey by obtaining three degrees from the University of Pittsburgh - a Master of Arts in Teaching, 1974, a Master of Arts in Mathematics, 1976, and, finally, a Doctorate in Mathematics Education, 1985.
Charles moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1970. Professionally, during his working years, he served as a Mathematics Teacher (a position he truly loved, and the students loved him), Assistant Director of Education, Deputy Executive Director of Education, and a University Professor. Charles is in Who's Who in American Education, recognized by the state of Pennsylvania, recognized by the university system of Pittsburgh, university fraternity, and was honored with certificates of excellence, and outstanding teacher awards. He is a member of the Cato Educational and Burial Fund, where he served as treasurer on the board, as well as treasurer for the Cato Family Reunion Committee for several years.
After 42 years as an educator, Charles retired and relocated to Statesboro, GA in 2016 to get away from the snow, and return to his home state with his wife where he planned to travel, watch Family Guy, wrestling, Star Wars, football, the local and national news, the stock market, enjoy a variety of restaurants, go fishing, and maintain the "honey do list." He wanted a motorcycle, but Mary would not agree to ride with him.
Charles is preceded in death by his grandparents, Edler and Beatrice Scott, who raised him; his father, Pvt William Scott; his mother, Louise Cato Nealy; and his stepfather, Levertis Nealy.
To celebrate and cherish his legacy, Charles is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Clark Scott of Statesboro, GA; his son, Edward E. Scott, Sr., of Pittsburgh, PA; his daughter, Charlena M.
