Lowman Stephens

–

Statesboro, Georgia

Mr. Lowman William Stephens was born on July 22, 1948, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, to the loving parentage of the late Joseph "Jake" Stephens and Lillie Mae "Pie" Stephens, who cherished and raised him with care and pride.

Lowman attended public schools in both Bulloch and Jenkins counties. He studied at Willow Hill School in Bulloch County and Aaron Elementary School and graduated as a member of the Burgess Landrum High School Class of 1967. An overall strong academic student, Lowman excelled in mathematics and was offered a scholarship to Florida A&M University upon graduating from high school. He later attended Savannah Technical School, where he pursued certification in auto mechanics.

Lowman served six years in the U.S. military, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam. During his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. His military occupational specialty was Field Wireman. Following his military service, Lowman worked as an auto mechanic with Georgia Power Company and K-Mart Auto Shop and later owned and operated his own auto mechanic shop.

Lowman loved fishing and hunting, grilling for family and friends, and tackling just about anything as a jack-of-all-trades.

Lowman was married to Edna Ruth Cross Stephens. He was a devoted father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, sibling, uncle, nephew, and cousin. His cherished memories will live on through his daughter, Alisa Cross; his three sons, Timothy Stephens, Lowman Stephens, Jr., and William Young; and his stepchildren, Kewonika "KeKe" Donaldson, Tray Moore, and Christy Young.

He will be lovingly remembered by his siblings: Eliza "Peaches" McCray of Rochester, New York; Wade Stephens (Wendy) of Omaha, Nebraska; Floria Mosely (Raleigh) of Miami, Florida; Joseph "Superman" Stephens (Cheryl) of Statesboro, Georgia; Larry Stephens (Fifina) of Milledgeville, Georgia; and his sister-in-law, Eva Stephens of Millen, Georgia.

Lowman was preceded in death by his sister, Annie Pearl Brady; brothers, Arnold "Joe" Stephens, James "Junior" Eason (Lue), and Carlton "Junior" Newton.

He is survived by two uncles, David Stephens (Eartha) and Morris Wilson (Henrietta), both of Orangeburg, South Carolina; and four aunts, Hattie Burke of Glennville, Georgia; Nancy Young (Ryan) of Miami, Florida; Claudia Greene (Kaponden) of Orangeburg, South Carolina; and Mary Wright of Holiday, Florida. Lowman also leaves behind nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and step-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Lowman's very special and beloved family treated him as their own father following the passing of his older brother, Joe, in 1994. Arnold "Bobo" Stephens served him tirelessly for many years until Lowman's passing. Bobo's siblings: Betty Grimes, Lureda Stephens, and Janice Mikell - also stood faithfully by Lowman until his transition.

Special thanks are extended to Smitty Jackson, Pearl Walker, Romay Thomas, Lorenzo Lassiter, the Gentiva Hospice staff, and the Gentilly Assisted Living staff for their compassionate care and support.
